PMPs, Preferred Deals and Programmatic Guaranteed: the deals guide

Published August 19, 2026

Everyone starts in the open auction — and serious operations quickly discover it's the entry level, not the game. Publishers keep their best inventory for negotiated channels, and the industry has been shifting spend toward controlled transactions for years. This is the map.

Want to put this into practice?

SeatNMD gives you DV360 access, supply and flexible operation.

Let's talk →

The four transaction types

Type Auction? Inventory Price
Open auction (RTB) Yes, everyone Everything publishers release openly Variable, lowest
PMP (Private Marketplace) Yes, invited buyers Curated packages from the publisher Floor-negotiated
Preferred Deal No — first look Specific inventory, fixed price, no commitment Fixed CPM
Programmatic Guaranteed No — reserved Guaranteed volume and placement Fixed, highest

Rule of thumb as you move down the table: more control, more quality, higher CPM, more negotiation.

Why pay more for deals?

Because the delta buys measurable quality: private deals typically deliver much higher viewability and dramatically lower fraud exposure than open exchange — you're buying named inventory from a known publisher, not anonymous impressions. For categories where context matters (finance, health, premium brands) and for scarce supply like CTV and DOOH, deals aren't a luxury; they're how the good inventory is accessed at all.

How a deal actually happens

  1. Define what you need: audience, context, format, volume.
  2. The publisher or SSP proposes packages and terms.
  3. A deal ID is created and shared.
  4. The deal ID is activated in your DSP — in DV360, it plugs into a line item like any other source, inheriting your audiences and frequency rules.

The bottleneck isn't technology — it's who you know and what you can negotiate. Publishers respond to buyers with volume and relationships. That's the core of what SeatNMD builds: an ecosystem of supply connections (PubMatic, OpenX, Equativ, LatinAd and premium publishers) so advertisers plug into negotiated routes instead of starting from zero.

A sane mix

A healthy campaign rarely goes 100% either way: open auction for scale and prospecting efficiency, PMPs for the quality layer, Programmatic Guaranteed where presence must be certain (launches, sponsorship-like placements, key CTV screens). Review the mix quarterly — deal quality drifts, and curation is ongoing work. It's one of the highest-leverage things a managed operation does for you.
